What is the difference between authentication and authorization?

Answer

Clear, interview-ready explanation

Authentication verifies who a user or client is. In Laravel, it is the process that establishes an authenticated user through mechanisms such as sessions, cookies, API tokens, or HTTP credentials.

Authorization decides whether that authenticated user may perform a particular action on a resource. Laravel commonly handles authorization with gates and policies. A user can be authenticated but still be forbidden from editing a record they do not own, so both controls are necessary.
